Doc Needs Your Help to Keep You Healthy

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jan_Louthain] Jan Louthain In the past 20 years weve seen the discovery of a treatment for HIV/Aids and for several types of depression; and weve seen the number of U.S. deaths from heart disease decrease by one-third. But lets look into the future. In the next few years we could have artificial retinas, lungs, or even kidneys that will clean our blood much like a dialysis machine. And the medications on the horizon! Based on studies of the human genome, cancer patients could expect to have medications designed especially for them that attack specific cancer sites instead of their whole body. Diseases ranging from addiction to Alzheimers could become as manageable as high blood pressure, and this could happen before the first Boomer turns 70. Many of us Boomers have parents with serious medical conditions, and now we may be developing our own. Theres no question we need new medical discoveries to save our lives or at least extend them. But as these discoveries, particularly oral medications, come onto the market, there are risks, especially when the patient has pre-existing conditions. The banned painkillers, Vioxx and Bextra, and diet medication, Fen-Phen, are cases in point. To assure the safety of the patient taking new drugs, everyone in the treatment process must work together. Unfortunately doctors dont always have complete medical details about a patient before they prescribe a new medication. The physician may be too busy to read the entire patient chart before prescribing treatment, or he/she may not be familiar with all the side effects or contraindications of a new drug thats just come onto the market. To complicate it further, the patient may have memory loss or disorientation which hampers him/her from giving a complete medical history or a detailed list of his current medications and dosages. Heres what you can do to reduce errors and generally improve the treatment you, your parents, or your children receive. 1. Prepare and keep updated a summary of the patients medical history. Be sure to include dates of surgeries, allergies, existing medical conditions, current symptoms/ complaints, and a history of the major medical diseases experienced by the patients family members. 2. Prepare a detailed list of medications the patient is currently taking, the frequency taken, and the dosage. 3. Accompany the patient to the doctors office/hospital if they have trouble remembering their medical history or treatment theyve received. If the patient is you, ask someone to accompany you who can help you remember important medical events. 4. Once a diagnosis has been made and a treatment regimen prescribed for the patient, ask questions about what to expect. How long will it take for the drug to have results? What reactions are normal? What reactions are not normal and should be reported? 5. Read the literature that comes with the medication, particularly the sections titled cautions, side effects, and before using this medicine. 6. Help the patient record side effects or reactions they experience from the medication. Either have them report these to their physician or ask if you can do it for them. Dont wait. 7. Listen to advertising on TV when new drugs are brought onto the market. These ads will tell you whether they have contraindications and what you should tell the physician if he starts to prescribe them. 8. Rely on websites such as http://www.medlineplus.gov or http://www.rxlist.com to learn more about the drugs prescribed. Today the patient and caregiver are part of the treatment team. To benefit most from the great new discoveries of modern medicine, we must demand and share information with the physician. By doing so, we can increase the chances of a speedy recovery and a generally longer life. It Doesn’t Take Long To Make Yourself Feel Better!

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By Rebecca White Spending 5 minutes on your face: FACE Cold winter winds deplete your skin of moisture. After cleansing, apply a hydrating mask: leave on for 3 mints. Then rinse off. Next, apply moisturizer. Look for a formula that replenishes nutrients naturally found in skin. Vitamin A & E. MAKEUP Apply gel-based blush. Blend it in with your fingertip, then top with a powder bronzer. The combination creates a natural-looking healthy flush. Add color and softness to your lips with an emollient berry or burgundy hued lip balm. Spending 1 minute on your face: FACE Use cleansing cloths. They are really quick and convient. And if you use cloths that contain moisturizers, you can cut your morning skin-care to one step. MAKE-UP Use mascara. If that’s all the time you have use it, then add a little lip gloss and you’re good to go. Ingredients you have in the house you can add to your bath water:1 cup of powdered milk…great for softening the skin Sprinkle a couple drops of your favorite perfume into the running bath water. Rose water Put oatmeal into a mesh bag ( use an old vegetable bag or laundry sock/lingerie) holder tie onto spout and let running water over it. If hubby buys you roses for a special occasion save some petals to float in the water along with the instant dry milk…wonderful you’ll feel like a princess. Oh yeah and after you let the oatmeal mesh bag run into the bath water use it to exfoliate your skin by rubbing it all over. Follow with a good moisturizer. Out of your bubble bath use baby’s. My favorite is the lavender kind…. and I use the baby shampoo too! Rebecca White is the host for Heal Yourself Talk Radio. The Dating Game Part II - Relationships

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Jaci Rae In Part I of this two part series, I discussed how to find a date, how to perfect your online profile and discussion topics. In this part, I want to discuss relationships and how to succeed in one. Once you have conquered the dating scene, how do you inspire the person who has sparked your interest in a relationship to want the same? That can be the hardest stepping stone for those who always seem to date, but never find a partner. Why is that? There are many reasons that can factor into that. You may be giving off signals that say youre too needy or desperate for a healthy relationship partner to be interested in or perhaps youre drawn to the dangerous type, better known as the serial dater or heartbreaker. If any of these scenarios fit your description, you need to look is inside yourself and make a change. I am certain youve heard, Before you can find the right person, you must be the right person. Sound familiar? You can be given all the information you need to find someone but if you are the same person with the same values and beliefs about yourself youve always held, you will attract the same type you have always attracted in the past. You have to be the right person naturally. You cant make yourself into the right person, but improving your self-talk and how you feel about yourself will attract the right person for you. You will never be the right person until you are the right person, meaning that you have to make the way you think and feel about yourself right. The law of attraction is: Similar kinds attract similar kinds. So first you must get your own life together and stop putting out the vibes of Im desperate to be in a relationship. If I could just find the one, I would be the one. Or Once I am in a healthy relationship I will be able to calm down and be happy. You need to calm down and be happy before you meet the right person or you will end up in the same cycle you have always been, with the wrong person. A rule of thumb is this: If you wouldnt date or marry you as you are right now, why would anyone else? Change the way you feel about yourself inside and the rest will fall into place. You cant be part of a great relationship until you are great yourself. A simple step that may seem silly, but is highly effective is to step in front of your mirror and repeat several times a day the following (even if you are a man do this. No one will be watching you but you): You are gorgeous darling! I love me so much! (Throw your arms around yourself.) I am worthy of the best! and other affirming statements. Remember that all statements are statements of self-disclosure. You will automatically attract what you believe about yourself both consciously and unconsciously. Did you know that our subconscious mind controls 87% of our thinking? Our conscious mind only controls 13%! If you have built in your subconscious mind with your conscious talk that you arent worthy, thats what will be projected and you will attract those that arent worthy. This exercise is to reprogram your subconscious mind. The next step is to change your pattern. While the man or woman you are dating may look different, sound different and come from an entirely different background from the other bad relationships youve had, are they really different? The philosopher George Santayana said, Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it. In other words, if you want the same results, do the same things you have always done. If you want different results then youve got to do something different! To get different results you may need to ask outside advice from objective observers. If you have already changed how you feel about yourself you should be attracting different people. However, if you seem to still attract bad relationships, you may need a second opinion. Use someone you trust who is in a great relationship to offer their advice. Now that youve changed how you feel about yourself, how do you keep a relationship an ever lasting one? With rumors flying about Britney Spears and Kevin Federlines break-up on the horizon (what a shocker!); millions of pages dedicated to the separation and divorce of Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson (I was hopeful, but wary). Where is the hope for the rest of us? How can we, as mere mortals, believe in ever lasting love? In the back of our minds we think that these celebrities have everything any couple could possibly need to enjoy the happiest ever after life imagined. I cant tell you how many times I hear people say, If only we had more money; A bigger house; If I were better looking; If I lost more weight; My life would be perfect; Our relationship wouldnt have so much stress; I would be happy. We look at the famous and say, They are the beautiful people. They travel the world. They have beautiful mansions and lots of money. They have an army of people waiting to do their bidding: publicists, managers, accountants, housekeepers and chiefs. If only I were in their shoes. What a great example and lesson to all of us not so fortunate people who arent blessed with their lives and the kind of money they posses; that neither money nor physical perfection makes a relationship happy or successful. Time, effort and determination are what make a relationship thrive. Im not implying that these celebrities dont put the time and effort into their relationships needed, only that all the things we say, If only we had wont make our relationships last longer or be any happier than theirs were. Key factors to a lasting relationship are laughter, a sense of humor about life as well as a lot of hard work. These three things have always been a common thread for every successful, happy, long-term relationship I have interviewed over the years. Every one of the couples state the same thing: Work hard; dont go to bed angry, resolving issues right away; and laugh with each other often. I was told that people who read the comic strips in their newspaper first live longer while people who head straight for the news or obituaries tend to live shorter lives. I havent been able to find the study that backs this up, but it makes sense. Most balanced comedians, without drug and alcohol problems, live longer lives and have happier marriages. All of the steps listed here that take you from finding a date to ever lasting love are only a small sampling of ideas and help. Remember to start at the shallow end before you dive into the deep waters, a life vest may not always be available. The last tip I will leave you with is something I call Soul Gazing. Its the simple technique of gazing into your partners eyes. I usually recommend 15 minutes, but in the beginning, 2-3 minutes is fine. No talking, no looking away. I have seen this technique strengthen relationships that were already strong and help those relationships that were on the brink of disaster. Try it. If you want to have the love you deserve, remember my simple rule: Love is a gift, its not a right. Love is a decision, its not a feeling. Make the decision to change how you feel about yourself and how you treat others and you too can have the lasting and deep love you deserve. Aromatherapy How to Use Pure Essential Oils for Healing - Cleaning

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By KG Stiles Pure essential oils have a wide range of therapeutic uses and benefits. The method applied can affect the results. In this article I will talk about methods of using aromatherapy for general all purpose cleaning. First, please remember that essential oils should never be applied neat (undiluted) to your skin. There are absolutely NO exceptions to this! This includes the soles of your feet or palms of your hands. When using oils neat for inhalation purposes please exercise care and dispense your oils on a tissue or cotton ball for direct inhalation. GUIDE FOR YOUR GENERAL ALL PURPOSE CLEANING: Adding essential oils known for their antibacterial and antiviral powers to your dishpan or scrub bucket will kill germs and leave your home and living environments smelling clean and fresh! SURFACE CLEANER: Disperse 8-10 drops of Lemon essential oil with 1-2 drops of Eucalyptus in dish soap and add to your sink or a bucket of warm water for a powerful surface cleaner. Wipe down your kitchen counters, all bathroom surfaces and your other living environments with these cleansing, germicidal oils. WASHING DISHES ~ Lemon oil is a great grease cutter; add 1-3 drops to your favorite dish soap and stir into your dish pan of warm water. Lemon oil is great for cleaning pots and pans! Properly administered essential oils are a natural, safe and effective way to enhance your health and well-being and can produce satisfying results where other methods have failed. Please consult with your physician regarding your health concerns. KG has utilized essential oils in her energy medicine practice for more than 30 years. During that time she has facilitated healing for thousands of people suffering from personal trauma, illness and injury. Through her unique AromaTest system KG formulates essential oil blends that heal. PLEASE NOTE: There are many cheap chemical copies of essential oils available, but these are not recommended for therapeutic use. How to Find the Perfect Gift

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By J. Newton You know the feeling. As you place a meticulously wrapped gift on a table filled with other presents, you cant help but second-guess your choice. Will they really like it? Did I spend enough on it? I wonder whats inside that one The reason we give giftswhether for weddings, birthdays, retirements, or holidaysis beside the point. The best gifts are those that let the recipient know you had no one else in mind when you chose it. By following a few simple guidelines, you can avoid any second-guessing yourself the next time you shop for a special occasion. Who are you shopping for? Consider the recipients ages, the hobbies they enjoy and their profession when thinking about gifts. If youre buying a gift for a close friend or relative you have the advantage of knowing his or her interests and hobbies. Depending on the occasion, this may be the perfect opportunity to recognize a significant personal accomplishment he or she has recently achieved. If you are shopping for someone outside your circle of close family and friends anything too personal should be avoided. Clothing and jewelry, for example, are items for which most people have very particular tastes. In cases like this, a safe bet is to shop by occasion for items that have been established as appropriate for specific events. What is the occasion? Shopping by occasion can help you locate a great gift in a short amount of time. As an example, lets say you are invited to join in the celebration of a coworkers 15th wedding anniversary. You are friendly with this person at work and have met his or her spouse a few times in a social setting. Some quick research on the Web might lead you to a short list of todays most popular anniversary gifts, including: Clocks Picture frames Crystal items Ice buckets Serving trays Toasting flutes Any of these items would make great gifts by themselves. However, there is one additional step that can transform a great gift into a one-of-a-kind gesture. Is personalization needed? When your search leads you to items like those listed above, the opportunity for personalization is always available. Crystal and glass can be etched, metals can be engravedthese days even wood can be directly engraved with precision detail. Youve decided on a stunning set of crystal toasting flutes for your coworkers celebration, and have opted to personalize the gift. This leads to another important topic. The name game If youre not sure what verbiage to use when personalizing a gift such as toasting flutes, youre not alone. Here are the basics: Initials: This can mean a first name initial, a last name initial, or first and last name initials of equal size. Stay away from using punctuation (periods) and suffixes (Jr., Sr., III, IV, MD, PhD, etc.). Monograms: Traditional monograms are created with the last name initial centered and larger than the other characters around it. The other characters are either the first and middle initials of an individual or the first initials of a husband and wife. For an individual named Theodore James Newton IV, a traditional monogram would read as TNJ. If Theodore James Newton IV is married to a woman named Dori-Anne, their monogram would read as DNJ. Most often, the womans first name appears first (although there is no rule keeping the mans name from appearing first). Other traditional layouts include a diamond monogram, a panel monogram, and the circle monogram, all of which are artistic in nature. Messages: The golden rule when writing an engraved message: when in doubt, keep it simple. For example, Happy 15th Anniversary may seem unimaginative but it stands the test of time. Another engraving taboo is signing the message as if it were a letter (i.e., Love, Mom & Dad). Save that sentiment for the gift card that will accompany the item being personalized. For birthdays and anniversaries, be sure to use the year the gift is being presented and not the year the event took place. The end result Taking all this into consideration, the crystal toasting flutes for your coworker might read something like this: Happy 15th Anniversary Anthony and Kim 3/11/06 The end result will be a gift that couldnt possibly be for anyone else and wont leave you second-guessing your selection. After giving such a good gift you should be prepared for invitations to more events hosted by the happy couple! Six Steps to Raising Financially Responsible Teens

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Crystal Paine In todays money-driven society, teens are constantly bombarded by magazines, television ads, and peer pressure which make them feel less than ideal if they do not wear the latest clothing style and drive a cool car. Briefly visit your local mall and you will observe multitudes of young people who shop as if credit cards have no maximum spending limit. With all this push for extravagance, is it even possible to raise your teens with money sense and save them from making serious financial mistakes? Although I have yet to have teenagers of my own, I was blessed to be raised by parents who taught me from a young age to be a wise steward of money. Let me share some things my parents did to instill in me that money is a limited resource and must be spent with care. 1. Start Early Just because your child is too young to have a real job, does not mean it is too early to start teaching basic financial principles. From the time we were little, we always received an allowance from our parents. We only received this money if we had done all of our daily/weekly chores. This taught us that money is not free; it is earned. 2. Set An Example You cannot expect your teens to wisely spend money if you do not set a good example for them. Do your children see you buying things on credit because you want them now and do not have the patience to wait until you are able to save up enough money? My dad was an excellent example in this area. Before making any large purchase (such as a car), he first decided what he could afford. Then, he began shopping around. Sometimes it would take him close to a year to find what he was looking for, for the price he wanted to pay. His patience always paid off and it left an indelible impression upon me. 3. Dont Buy Everything For Them It is easy for many parents to want to help teens out by buying most everything for them. But, is this truly helping? When your teenager enters the real world on their own, they are going to have some hard lessons to learn if you always bought everything they needed and wanted for them. As soon as we were able to begin earning money, my dad had us start paying for some of our own things such as clothes, gifts for other people, things we wanted, and so on. Because my parents did not buy everything for us, it taught me the value of hard work, to think before I spend, and to look for the best buy. 4. Teach Your Teens the Value of Hard Work In a day when laziness is rampant, teach your teens instead the importance of being a hard worker. What you work for, you usually appreciate more. If your teenager has worked hard to buy themselves a car, it can be almost guaranteed that they will appreciate it more and take better care of it. 5. Train Your Teens to Think Before They Spend This might seem like a no-brainer, but learning to think before I spend has literally saved me hundreds of dollars over the years. Teach your teens to ask themselves at least three questions before making any purchase: 1) Do I have the money on hand to pay for this? 2) Do I need this? 3) Can I buy this somewhere else for less? Oftentimes, in asking these questions, I will talk myself out of making the purchase! I will realize I dont really have the money to pay for it or I dont need the item. Other times, I will think of a way I can purchase this item for less. 6. Encourage Your Teens to Get the Best Buy In addition to asking these questions, also train your teens to look for the best deal. It is amazing what variation in prices you will find out there. For instance, the water pump burst on one of our vehicles recently. When we took it into auto shop for repair, they said that we would have to take it to a more specialized shop, since the engine would need to be taken out in order to replace the water pump. The first price we were quoted was $775. Knowing that was out of our current budget, my husband began calling around to different body shops. One place quoted him around $500 another quoted him a little over $300. By calling around to find the best deal, we are going to be saving hundreds of dollars on this repair job. By Angie Dixon “But ADHD symptoms are just things everyone does.” Have you heard this? If you haven’t, keep listening. I’m sure you will soon, probably from someone who means well. And it is true that not everyone who is overly hyperactive, inattentive or impulsive has ADHD. It’s also true that some people with these symptoms most certainly do have ADHD. So how do you tell when it’s really ADHD? Diagnosis of ADHD requires that the ADHD behavior be inconsistent with a person’s age. Suspected ADHD behaviors must also begin before age seven and continue for at least six months. But the main thing required for an ADHD diagnosis, if all other factors are present, is that the behaviors must create a real handicap in at least two areas of a person’s life. For a child this could include in the schoolroom, on the playground, at home, in the community (for instance in church), or in social settings. What does all this mean? It means that yes, it’s possible that someone with ADHD “symptoms” doesn’t have ADHD. It also means that there are specific diagnostic criteria for determining whether ADHD is present. The specialist who asseses your child for ADHD will consider whether these possible ADHD behaviors are excessive, long-term and pervasive–whether they are more common in your child than in other, non-ADHD children of the same age, whether they are a continuous problem and not a situational response, and whetehr they occur in more than one setting. The answers to all of these questions and the pattern of behavior your child exhibits will be compared to ADHD diagnostic criteria in the DSM-IV-TR, a diagnostic manual for psychiatric disorders.
