By Nanci Holloway-Prince Cosmetic companies like Erno Laszlo, Estee Lauder and Lancome, train their sales associates to sell unsuspecting women hundreds of dollars of unnecessary skin care products. SELLING SKIN CARE, TELLING LIES - 75% of all drugs and cosmetics are derived from nature. One of the lies, which builds the sale, is that the eye area is too frail and delicate for your facial moisturizer. “Only an eye cream will work on the eye area”, another lie. “You must use our cleanser” in order to receive the full benefits of our moisturizer. “You won’t receive the full anti aging benefits if you don’t use the whole system”. All Lies. Try cleaning your skin with baby shampoo, milk and sugar, equal parts. Want to look younger, add cornmeal to the cleanser. Acne a problem, add aspirin. Splash to rinse 10 times with very warm water. Need a toner, use Green Tea or Orange or Aloe Vera Juice. Moisturize with a vitamin e capsule or soy bean oil (vitamin e). For melasma or brown spots, an over the counter fade cream (under $10.00) twice a day after cleansing takes the place of an in office procedure. Erno Laszlo won’t even sell individual items, they insist you use everything from Erno Laszlo, alcohol, mineral oil and petroleum based. The news media won’t tell you that cosmetic companies like Erno Laszlo use, pore clogging petroleum and mineral oil and charge the consumer up to $100 a jar for sugar, castor oil and fragrance. Can you imagine being a writer for a magazine trying to tell the truth about their advertisers skin care products? There is no market for the truth. Cosmetic companies use sugar or glycol acid in anti aging products because sugar penetrates the skin and the skin cell. This means, yes you can take a bath in sugar and you will look younger. Your skin will become more supple looking because the sugar plumps up the skin cells in your skin. If a cosmetic company creates a chemical that penetrates the skin and the skin cell, it would be considered a drug, not a cosmetic and require a doctors prescription. Nature provides aspirin (salicylic acid), derived from a plant, the active ingredient in acne treatment skin care products, from Proactive and Erno Laszlo. The grape seed extract in eye care products from Erno Laszlo and Estee Lauder, is Thompson Seedless Green Grapes and green tea is green tea. How can women spend so much money buying such inferior skin care,,just bad copies of natural ingredients (food). Fruit acid in cosmetics are made from: apples, oranges, grapefruit, berries, all very good for your skin. Cosmetic companies make chemicals that mimic the action of fruit on your face. Honey contains a natural peroxide and is a great skin care treatment for dry skin. Where can a woman go for a true education on her skin, not the department store cosmetic counter, they have lies for the consumer. The media does not protect the consumer against cosmetic companies because they are afraid of offending their advertisers or even their shareholders. What about a book you say that exposes that fact that exfoliation with cornmeal will make your skin look younger and aspirin can replace a product sold only with a prescription. Same problem, who would publish the book, a publisher owned by corporation who owns a skin care company. Where would such a book be advertised? Can you literally rub lines and wrinkes away with a wash cloth and water, yes. This is a very inexpensive treatment for getting rid of “crows feet”. Aloe Vera smells really bad, but boy does it penetrate the skin without an rx. Natural ingredients like milk, sugar and aloe are synthesized preserved with chemicals and mixed into mineral oil and water for $65.00 from Erno Laszlo. The same corporation that owns the skin care company, owns the newspaper, magazine, book publisher and television station. Thesegraphic images are not sugar coated and fancy like advertisements thatother large clothing companies use. Instead they are meant to startleor shock the public and create an image in people’s minds that maycreate concern for the well being of people, animals, and the planet,and at the same time, create a curiosity that would impel someone tovisit their clothing stores and learn more about them. Benetton has a hard time understanding why their advertisements sparkso much controversy. All of their ads feature real life situations.Nothing is made up or fake about their ads. They are not purposely outthere to exploit human suffering. Instead they are trying todemonstrate the extent of the problem. Many of their ads featureissues of multiculturalism, peace, the tragic effects of war, anddisease. Many people are aware of these problems but choose to turntheir heads or forget about them, instead of doing something to helpthe cause. Two specific advertisements that I foundto be very clever and interesting are those that promote the breakingdown of race discrimination. The two ads remind the public that nomatter how we look on the outside, everyone looks the same on theinside; literally. One of these advertisements has a picture of threereal hearts. They are obviously not human hearts, but the viewer ofthe ad gets the idea. On each of the three hearts it says one word;Black, White, and Yellow. As mentioned before, the advertisement hopesto remind and convince the public that although we might lookdifferent on the outside, that on the inside we are the exact same.Benetton tries to promote equality regardless of colour, race, orreligion. The second such advertisement that hopes to communicate andpromote the need for compassion with all other human beings is that ofthree girls. The picture shows the three girls, one of Africandescent, one of Caucasian descent, and the third girl of Orientaldescent, with their heads side by side, sticking out their tongues.Once again, Benetton shows that regardless of the way we look on theoutside, that on the inside we are all the same. All our tongues arethe same colour, and look the same. The same goes with our hearts. Itis these types of advertisements that define Benetton and their cause.They are campaigning for equality. They want people to remember thatwhen it comes down to it, we are all human beings, and that there isno need for hate amongst us. Benetton has made a bold move in theadvertising industry and should at least be commended for trying to dosomething that is very unorthodox. But of course, not everyone seestheir campaign towards progressing humanity in the same way. Manybelieve that “Benetton is trying, through its depiction of the intensesuffering of living things, to evoke a feeling of compassion on thepart of the consumer, and to suggest that it is sympathetic”.Controversy has erupted due to its numerous ads. Some people have seenBenetton’s advertisements and have been outraged but have not takenaction, while others have been more active in taking a stand andensuring Benetton stops publishing their immoral ads. A few ads inparticular have stricken a chord with many of Benetton’s opponents.Opponents of Benetton’s ads have been angered with Benetton forexploiting human suffering. By Brandon Cornett Mr. and Mrs. Buyer have just seen a listing photo of a house that’s right up their alley. It seems to have the features they want, and it’s within their price range. Now, continuing in the process, they read the details. They read what you’ve written to describe the house. This is when the quality of your listing language either moves them forward, or drops them off. The first parts of the listing are easy to write, and they’re often enough to get a buyer to come out for a visit. Number of bedrooms. Square feet. The basics. But your goal is to get as many interested buyers as possible to come out, which obviously increases the likelihood of a sale. So you have to go beyond the basics. Here are some tips to help you do just that: Do the necessary research. When I’m hired to write about the benefits / qualities of a product or service, I almost always spend more time researching than writing. I never write a single word until I know, with certainty, what’s worth writing about and what’s not. The point is, you can’t write everything about a house in a listing there’s no room for that. So you have to examine the property inside and out to find those things that make it truly unique. You have to dig up the unique selling points. Put the reader in the house. Whenever possible, try to describe the enjoyment that results from a particular feature (as opposed to describing the feature by itself). Note the difference in the examples below. Before: This house has a rear deck with a lake view. After: Enjoy watching sunsets over Jefferson Lake from your screened-in rear deck. Before: The family room features a large brick fireplace. After: The family room’s grand fireplace will keep you cozy during Colorado winters. Don’t underestimate the small stuff. If you’re creating a short, bulleted laundry list of features, be as specific and all-inclusive as possible. The house might have a feature that makes you yawn but makes a buyer perk up: Extra outlets in the media room. Low-maintenance deck material. Wrought-iron gate. Picket fence. Sometimes the smallest things make the biggest difference to people. Use brand names. Certain brands can add value to a house through name alone. First, you must identify these brand names and make a list of them. This comes from the research we mentioned above. Then it’s simply a matter of weaving them into your property description. Note the difference in the example below: Before: Rear deck After: Rear deck built with low-maintenance Trex material (with transferable lifetime warranty). I’ve exaggerated the contrast between these examples for demonstration purposes. But you get the idea. Conclusion Buyers are looking for more than a house. They also want a home. A house is walls and ceilings. A home is where memories are made. It’s up to you to bring this across with your listing language. (In contrast, most bonsai dislike heat.) Unlike the Chinese Elm, Fukien Tea can be difficult to grow when in certain climates. However, it is also popular with many bonsai enthusiasts it can bear flowers for an entire year if grown under the proper conditions. Baby Jade. Baby Jade, sometimes called Small Leaf Jade, Elephant Bush or Elephant plant is a succulent bonsai native to South Africa. It has pale green round leaves and stores water it its trunk, branches and leaves thus can go for long periods without watering making it a great plant for beginners. It grows quickly and can be adapted to any style. Brush Cherry. The Brush Cherry is an evergreen shrub native to Florida. It has puffy white flowers and round berries set against small glossy leaves which, if given enough light, can have red highlights. It loves warm tropical climates and grows best in natural light but can be grown indoors if enough light is provided. The brush Cherry needs a lot of water in summer and you should take care to keep the soil moist but not leave standing water in the pot. You can also use a humidity tray to mist the plant. In the wild the Brush Cherry can grow to 35 feet, but as a Bonsai it grows to a perfect 14 inches in 10 years. There are many other types of bonsai trees for sale; be sure to look them up! One that always echoes in my mind, and which may be even more prominently true in the online world states that a confused customer never buys. Unlike his stores whose helpful employees stood by to assist anyone that displayed a stunned look, e-commerce sites dont have that luxury. Your visitors cannot personally be tended so the minute they get confused they move on to the next site. The following are suggestions on how to avoid these situations and get your register ringing. Although these may seem obvious, check the net, more sites violate them youd think. First Impressions Unlike in the dating world where someone may actually make an effort to get to know you, your website has little time to make a stunning first impression before your visitors clicks that little X at the top-right of their screens, never to return. Most likely I wont arrive at your website by chance. Ill probably type some search terms in an engine (lets use flower delivery as an example for this little story) and notice your site shows up relevant to my query. Now the first thing Im looking for upon arrival is how your e-business will help me. So please show me right away (the last thing I want to do is sit around for 5 minutes while a fancy flash presentation loads). That tiny piece of real estate above the fold on your homepage is often all people look at; use that space wisely. Benefits How your product/service will benefit your customers is the first thing they care about. Tune your visitors into everyones favorite radio station: WII-FM (Whats In It For Me). As mentioned above I, like most people these days, need to know how your goods will help me in a fraction of a second. So show me right away in a very clear fashion that your flowers are the most beautiful around or on sale or your deliveries are fast and seldom lost. Take some time to think why visitors would come to your site, what theyre after and then show them theyve come to the right place. Site Structure If you dont have enough space to clearly layout all your benefits on your homepage in a clear and concise manner, by all means create a few extra benefits pages. Maybe one for prices, one for delivery options, one for flower arrangements and so on. Just make sure to label them clearly in an obvious menu bar. Dont make me search your website for them. Dont make me use the sitemap and for the love of all that is holy, dont make me go through 6 additional pages to get to them. About You vs. About Us So youve been in business since 1987. You won the prestigious International Flower Store (IFS) award 6 years running. You give 100% of your profits to charities. Thats wonderful and may make me more inclined to do business with you. Just remember that theres one person I care more about you and thats me. Dont confuse me by throwing all this extra info about yourself my way. What the heck is the IFS anyways? I want to hear more about me. If you really have an urge to stuff your site with excess info, at least tell me that something along the lines of by giving our flowers to your wife, she wont be mad at you for a few hours. Its what you can do for me, not how good you are, thatll have me reaching for my credit card. Checkout Im pretty sure Im not the only one thats had this experience one too many times. I go through your site, love your flowers and go to checkout. Only to find out that your actual checkout process involves 18 steps, requires blood samples and a full legal team to complete. After cursing the day you were born, I kindly leave your site and buy flowers elsewhere. Make your checkout as easy to complete as humanly (or electronically) possible. Take every method of payment possible. Ask only for the information you really need (Im pretty sure you dont need my fax number to send out flowers). And at the end of it, give me some sort of receipt confirmation so that I may rest assured all went well. Look at Google as an extreme example of a mindless site. Yes they made their service better then the competition. But when you go to their site, all there is, is a simple search box. Its clean, fast and easy to operate.
